Drogo Sacramentary

c. 850
Manuscript (Ms. lat. 9428), 265 x 215 mm
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

This manuscript of 130 folios contains prayers in Latin for celebrating Mass. Its patron was Drogo (801-855), archbishop of Metz, illegitimate son of Charlemagne. It was prepared for use by the bishop of Metz.

The codex is illustrated with numerous initials, which are highly original. They mostly enclose small scenes, such as the three Marys at the tomb shown here. The "D" initial with Easter scene is from folio 58r.
