The school of miniaturists that formed in the Benedictine Abbey at Reichenau on Lake Constance and developed into an outstanding cultural centre carried out a great deal of works for the emperors of the Ottonian-Saxon dynasty. Their high reputation is based on a creative period of surprisingly few years around the turn of the 10th to the 11th century. The most famous examples of the manuscripts produced by this group are the Bamberg Apocalypse, the Gospel Lectionary of Henry II, and the Gospel Book of Otto III.
The Gospel Book, probably intended for the personal use of Otto III, contains the four Gospels in Latin. The ornamental page (folio 104r) with the opening words St Luke's Gospel - Quoniam quidem - is one of the four splendid initial pages of the evangeliary.
