Amongst the most magnificent and artistically refined codices of the Ottonian period is the Gospel Book of Otto III which was produced around the year 1000. It was produced in the Benedictine Abbey at Reichenau.
This folio represents the storm on the Sea of Galilee. Christ is seen resting in the stern of the boat. Above him we see the billowing sail hinting at the imminent storm. Now Peter bends down to him to waken him. Next to Peter, on his right-hand side, we see the awakened Christ as he calms the pale, horned gods of the wind.
