Gospel Book of Otto III

c. 1000
Manuscript (Clm. 4453), 334 x 242 mm
Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich

Amongst the most magnificent and artistically refined codices of the Ottonian period is the Gospel Book of Otto III which was produced around the year 1000. It was produced in the Benedictine Abbey at Reichenau. One of its most remarkable folios is the Washing of the Feet of Peter, in which the separation of pictorial architecture and architectural picture has been largely abandoned.
