Gospel Lectionary of Henry II

c. 1010
Manuscript (Clm. 4452), 425 x 320 mm
Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich

This magnificent product of the Reichenau school of illumination contains the Gospel Readings for church feast days (pericopes) in Latin. It was gifted to the Bamberg cathedral by Emperor Henry II.

On this double-page (folios 8v and 9r), the two miniatures prefix the gospel reading for the first Christmas mass. The powerful illustrations show the annunciation to the shepherds and the birth of Christ.
