This evangeliary containing the four Gospels was produced around 1030 in the scriptorium of the Benedictine Abbey at Echternach. The abbey was founded in 698. Close contacts existed with the nearby bishopric city of Trier, which became an outstanding centre of arts. and the illuminators were in close contact with those working in Reichenau. Most of the manuscript produced around 1030 were for Emperor Henry III (reigned 1039-1056).
When opened up, this double-page (folios 20v and 21r) shows St. Matthew in profile (left) and the winged man carrying the huge open book (right).
