Manuscript (Hs. 156142), 446 x 310 mm

This evangeliary containing the four Gospels was produced around 1030 in the scriptorium of the Benedictine Abbey at Echternach. The abbey was founded in 698. Close contacts existed with the nearby bishopric city of Trier, which became an outstanding centre of arts. and the illuminators were in close contact with those working in Reichenau. Most of the manuscript produced around 1030 were for Emperor Henry III (reigned 1039-1056).

The entire text of the lavishly decorated book is written in gold. On folio 78r, the parable of the rich man and the beggar (Luke 16: 19-30) is illustrated in three sections. At top the rich man is dining with his guests, while in the middle and bottom sections the deaths of the beggar and the rich are illustrated, respectively.
