Hitda Codex

c. 1020
Manuscript (Cod. 1640), 290 x 218 mm
Hessische Landesbibliothek, Darmstadt

The early phase of Cologne book illumination reached its height in the early 11th century. Its chief work was the Hitda Codex (a Gospel Book), the gift of a distinguished abbess to her convent. The miniature on folio 117r is a famous scene of a storm on the sea.
