St Jerome's Commentary on Isaiah

1090s
Manuscript (Ms. Bodley 717)
Bodleian Library, Oxford

At the very end of this late eleventh-century manuscript (on folio 287v) is a tiny portrait of 'Hugo pictor', Hugh the Painter, with the caption that this is a picture of the painter and illuminator of the book. The book belonged to Exeter Cathedral, but Hugh himself may have worked in a monastery in Normandy (at Jumièges Abbey not far from Rouen).
