Bede (c. 672-735), also referred to as Saint Bede or the Venerable Bede (Latin: Beda Venerabilis), was an English monk at the Northumbrian monastery of Saint Peter at Monkwearmouth and of its companion monastery, Saint Paul's, in modern Jarrow, Northumbria. His historical works included The Life of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. Saint Cuthbert (c. 634-687) was an Anglo-Saxon monk, bishop and hermit, associated with the monasteries of Melrose and Lindisfarne in the Kingdom of Northumbria. After his death he became one of the most important medieval saints of Northern England, with a cult centred around his tomb at Durham Cathedral. Cuthbert is regarded as the patron saint of northern England.
The drawing on folio 20 of this manuscript, executed by an unknown artist, depicts a scene from the life of St Cuthbert when his horse finds bread for the saint.
