Tree of Jesse

c. 1130
Manuscript, 125 x 75 mm
Bibliothèque Municipale, Dijon

This coloured ink drawing on parchment is from a manuscript made at the Cistercian abbey of Citeaux. It is done in a style that reflects Byzantine influences. It is an early and rudimentary example of the Tree of Jesse, with the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ at her breast (the Virgo Lactans, an earthly image of the Virgin Mary, first evolved in the Coptic art of Christian Egypt).
