Stammheim Missal

1160-80
Manuscript (Ms. 64), 285 x 190 mm
J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

This manuscript is certainly the most richly decorated German missal of the 12th century, its 14 full-page miniatures, probably by one hand, are among the best paintings of the age. The codex was produced in the Benedictine abbey of St. Michael in Hildesheim.

The miniature on folio 152r shows St Michael and his angels conquering the dragon and devil.
