The Garden of Delights (Hortus Deliciarum)

c. 1180
Manuscript (facsimile)
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

The picture shows a group of Jews, a detail of the Last Judgment. During the Middle Ages, Jews are frequently singled out for specific punishment in Last Judgment scenes. This can be seen in the illustration to the Garden of Delights in which a group of Jews, naked but for their pointed hats, are thrown by demonic, grimacing figures into a burning cauldron neatly labeled Judei. Such imagery, devised by the church, provided an ideological justification for violence against the Jews.
