Berthold Sacramentary, folio 6r

The picture shows folio 6r, the August page of the liturgical calendar listing the dates of celebrations of saints and mysteries of Jesus in Christianity. There are several saints' feast days in August, with masses and miniatures associated with them in the Sanctorale. These are: August 5 (St Oswald on folio 101v), August 10 (St Lawrence on folio 104v), August 24 (St Bartholomew on folio 108v) and August 29 (St John the Baptist on folio 110r).

Because this is a Sacramentary, the imagery is tightly aligned with the liturgical calendar. The sacramentary's liturgical function shapes the iconography: major feasts receive full-page miniatures, minor feasts receive historiated initials.
