Berthold Sacramentary, folio 56r

1215-17
Manuscript (MS M.710), vellum, 293 x 204 mm
The Morgan Library and Museum, New York

The picture shows folio 56r, which contains a full-page miniature. The top and bottom registers depict the Resurrection, while the Noli me tangere occupies the middle part of the miniature.

The Berthold Master's iconography sits precisely at the hinge between styles. It is Romanesque: rigid symmetry, frontal poses, hieratic calm; and Gothic: heightened emotional expressiveness, more fluid gestures, increased attention to individualised faces.
