Named after Jesse (the father of King David), the Jesse Tree traces the family tree of Jesus Christ from creation through the Old Testament prophets. It appeared in the Middle Ages to visually teach the Bible stories to people who could not read.
A typical form of the Jesse Tree is to show the figure of Jesse reclining or sleeping at the foot of the pictorial space. From his side or his navel springs the trunk of a tree or vine, which ascends, branching to either side. On the branches are figures representing Christ's ancestors. The trunk generally ascends vertically to Mary, and then Christ at the top. The Berthold Master's miniature shows Mary on the trunk, but the ancestors' figures are substituted by symbolic birds.
