The belief that the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius personally decapitated the Sasanian King Chosroes II is a medieval Christian myth. In reality, Chosroes II was overthrown, imprisoned, and executed by his own son Kavad II during a coup on February 28, 628 AD, while Heraclius was elsewhere. Medieval European and Byzantine tradition transformed Heraclius into a holy crusader figure, conflating political regicide with a personal duel or triumphant execution.
