Westminster Psalter

c. 1200
Manuscript (Royal MS 2 a xxii), 230 x 155 mm
British Library, London

This Latin Psalter was compiled for the Westminster Abbey in London. The illumination includes roundels of the Signs of the Zodiac in colours and gold, in the calendar; five full-page prefatory miniatures in colours and gold; ten inhabited, historiated, or decorated initials in colours and gold. The painting of this Psalter is remarkable for the fullness and softness of the style of the drapery. It is not known whether the Psalter was executed by a man trained in London.

The picture shown here depicts Christ in Majesty.
