Exceptionally, medieval artists would sometimes convey the full horror of war. Among other Old Testament images, the miniature on folio 10v of this 13th-century French Bible depicts an episode from the Book of Joshua, the Conquest of Ai (Joshua 8:1-29.). Soldiers are shown, some with visors or helmets, some mounted on horses, one caparisoned, one holding bannered lance, others armed with shields, lances, swords. One raises pick-axe above fallen soldier. another mounts ladder against building from which one heaves stone and one attacks with battle-axe. The King of Ai, crowned, hangs from machine of war.
