This manuscript contains the Corpus Juris Civilis of Justinian, Emperor of the East between 527 and 565. Justinian brought together the constitutions of emperors and the texts of Roman jurisprudence. The decoration consists of brightly coloured illuminated initials, outlined in black at the beginning of each book.
The initial on folio 1 shows the Emperor Justinian supporting the letter "C" which is decorated with vine scrolls, volutes, and floral motifs.
