The drawing on folio 19r of the English late 13th-century English parchment codex illustrates Galen's theory of the blood, in which the veins and the arteries were thought to be quite separate. Claudius Galenus (129–c. 210 AD), better known as Galen of Pergamon, was a prominent Greek physician, surgeon and philosopher in the Roman empire.
