The Psalter of St Louis has 78 full-page miniatures on heavy parchment, narrating biblical events prior to King David, from Cain and Abel to the coronation of Saul. It was intended for the king's own private prayer in the palace chapel, Sainte-Chapelle, built in Paris in 1243-48.
The miniature on folio 9v depicts the dramatic climax of the story of Lot and his wife. The picture shows two angels going about the business of destruction the city of Sodom. Lot, wearing the conical hat of the Jews, is leading his daughters away, while his wife, overcome by curiosity, looks back and is transformed into a pillar of salt.
