Works of John of Sacrobosco

1290s
Manuscript
Private collection

This manuscript contains works of Johannes of Sacrobosco (John of Holywood, c. 1195-1256), an English monk, educated at Oxford, canon of the Order of St Augustine at the monastery of Holywood in Nithsdale. Sacrobosco taught mathematics and astronomy in Paris from about 1220.

The present manuscript was illuminated in Paris in the late thirteenth century. Folio 11r, illustrated here, shows the end of Algorismus, on arithmetic, and the opening of De Sphera, on the sphere of the terrestrial globe and on the movements of the stars and the planets. It is based on the works of Ptolemy.
