Cantigas de Santa María, Códice Rico, folio 5r

1280s
Manuscript (Ms. T-I-1), 490 x 326 mm
Real Biblioteca de San Lorenzo, El Escorial

The Códice Rico contains 195 cantigas (200 originally) and is the first of the four preserved Cantigas manuscripts in which text, music, and image are combined. This manuscript stands out from among this group through its exceptionally impressive decoration.

The picture shows folio 5r containing a miniature depicting King Alfonso, surrounded by his scribes, one with a pen, ready to write the modifications dictated by the king. Three minstrels with stringed instruments are on the left. The scene likely depicts the rehearsal for one of the Cantigas. In the two columns below the miniature are text with initials and sheet music with a decorative initial O.
