The Códice Rico contains 195 cantigas (200 originally) and is the first of the four preserved Cantigas manuscripts in which text, music, and image are combined. This manuscript stands out from among this group through its exceptionally impressive decoration.
The picture shows folio 196r. The six scenes on the miniature illustrate Cantiga CXL, which - exceptionally - features no explanatory text. The two scenes in the upper register show the royal collector and author surrounded by senior clergymen. The two scenes in the middle register depict the Annunciation and the Assumption. In the lower register, the Crucifix and a party attended by a demon are depicted.
