The Códice Rico contains 195 cantigas (200 originally) and is the first of the four preserved Cantigas manuscripts in which text, music, and image are combined. This manuscript stands out from among this group through its exceptionally impressive decoration.
The picture shows a full-page miniature on folio 200r. The miniature illustrates cantiga CXLIIII; its six scenes depict the miracle of the bull at Plasencia. A man prays to the Virgin and then goes off to buy his ticket to the fight. Unfortunately, he falls into the arena and is about to be gored to death when the Virgin sends the bull to sleep and the man escapes. When it wakes up, everyone congratulates the bull.
