In the Códice Rico, each composition is accompanied by one or even two illuminated pages. These are divided into six sections and framed by geometric-motif borders interrupted by coats of arms. The miniatures were executed by various artists who show French influence.
The miniature on page 231 illustrates Cantiga 213. It depicts the story of Don Tomé, a teamster who makes his living conveying goods to market. The second panel of the miniature shows him embracing his wife before setting off. The hind quarters of the beasts he drove, carrying wine, meal and grain on them, are shown as they race out of the picture. As showhn in the third panel, whenever he is away on business, his wife sleeps with other men.
