In the Códice Rico, each composition is accompanied by one or even two illuminated pages. These are divided into six sections and framed by geometric-motif borders interrupted by coats of arms. The miniatures were executed by various artists who show French influence.
Some songs are based on tales derived from books of miracles compiled at the Virgin's sanctuaries in the Iberian Peninsula. The six panels of the miniature on page 170 depict one of the miracles when she rescued a woman who had fallen into the sea.
