The section of the codex from folios 1r to 9r contains illustrations of only 8 of the 12 zodiac signs. From folios 10r to 36v, a new section begins with a sequence of large and small circular diagrams integrating text and image, representing planetary houses, decans, and degrees. The illuminations are geometric, schematic, and scientific in character, executed with compass precision and minimal figuration, exemplifying the Alfonsine synthesis of astronomy and art. The picture shows folio 10v, immediately following the introductory series with an illustration for Leo. It places the lion prominently in the centre, while subsidiary human and animal figures represent the decanal and paranatellontal imagery associated with the sign. | |
