Libro de Astromagia, folio 33r

1276-79
Manuscript (Reg.lat.1283.pt.A), parchment
Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana

The picture shows folio 33r containing two-column text and circular miniatures below both columns. These images are part of a series depicting sacrifices to Mercury as he stands in each zodiacal sign.

The Libro de Astromagia contains very rare representations of a magus or necromancer performing magical ceremonies. On the present folio, the image in the left column features a ceremony to empower a magical ring with celestial rays. Mercury appears as a winged figure. Within a small attached circle, Mercury is also represented riding a peacock above the sign of Libra.

The image in the right column depicts the kneeling magus sacrificing the goat. Mercury is represented within the small attached circle above the sign of Scorpio.

The small circles represent the connection between a Planet and a Zodiac.
