The Dominican friar Vincent of Beauvais (c. 1190–c. 1264) wrote the Speculum Maius (The Great Mirror), the main encyclopedia that was used in the Middle Ages. It consisted of three parts, the Speculum Naturale, Speculum Doctrinale and Speculum Historiale. The Speculum Historiale was translated into French in 1332 at the request of Jeanne de Bourgogne, queen of France. This copy of the Miroir Historiale, as the translation was called, was made soon afterwards, c. 1335, for her son, John the Good, then aged about 16, afterwards king of France. It later passed to the libraries of Charles V and Charles VI.
