Livre des Saints

Manuscript (Est. 116)
Biblioteca Estense, Modena

The text of this manuscript includes the story of the birth of Mary, accounts of several miracles of the Virgin, passages on the childhood of Jesus, and the lives and miracles of numerous saints. The codex has fifty-four miniatures filling the width of one column, the same number of initials decorated with geometric and foliate motifs. The figurative cycle is complex, because miniatures with pale, typically Byzantine colours are found alongside Romanesque style decoration using brighter colours.

The three saints represented in the small panel on folio 126 are Protus, Hyacinth and Eugenia.
