The codex contains an anonymous verse poem written c. 1320 by Convenole da Prato (c. 1270-1338), a teacher and poet from Prato, Petrarch's master. The poem eulogizes King Robert of Anjou (1278-1343). Of the 36 leaves in the codex, 30 contain miniatures, some including single figures and other showing groups. The decoration is considered to have been executed by artists of a Florentine workshop whose style is close to Taddeo Gaddi.
The miniature on folio 10v, representing Robert of Anjou sitting on a throne and holding the globe, has a monumental character reminiscent of panel and fresco painting. The blue ground is enriched with gold-leaf fleur-de-lis, a symbol found in the arms of the House of Anjou. Scholars have suggested that this manuscript was given to Robert of Anjou by the magistrates of Prato.
