Benoît de Sainte Maure: Roman de Troie

1340s
Manuscript (Reg. lat. 1505)
Biblioteca Apostolica, Vatican

This manuscript contains the French translation, completed in about 1160 by Benoît de Sainte Maure, of the "De bello troiano" by Dictys Cretensis and the "Excidio Troiae" by Dares Phrygius. Almost all of the leaves of the codex are illustrated with miniatures executed by a number of artists who were not particularly expert.

Folio 197v, shown here, depicts the Greeks offering the wooden horse to the Trojans.
