Grandes Chroniques de France de Charles V

1375-80
Manuscript (Ms. français 2813), 350 x 240 mm (folio size)

The scenes on folio 4r of the manuscript depict episodes from the Trojan War and the mythical Trojan origins of the French people. In the top left the Greeks land on the coast of Asia Minor. In the top right they besiege the heavily fortified city with its many towers. In the bottom left the surviving Trojans, driven from their conquered city, establish the fortified settlement of Sycambria on the Danube. In the adjoining picture they defeat the Romans in a great cavalry battle. The leader of the Trojans is already clothed and crowned like a French king.
