Livy: History of Rome

c. 1370
Manuscript (Ms. 777)
Bibliothèque de Sainte-Geneviève, Paris

This royal copy of Livy's history of Rome translated into French was illuminated in Paris about 1370. Originally it belonged to Charles V, king of France (1364-80). The miniatures here (folio 316r) show the Romans sending a declaration of war to Philip V of Macedon, landing in Macedon, enlisting the support of neighbouring kings, and going into battle.
