MINIATURIST, French

La Somme le Roy

14th century
Manuscript (Est. 34)
Biblioteca Estense, Modena

This French manuscript contains a medieval moral treatise composed by Laurent de Bois, a Dominican monk. The monk compiled the text in 1279 for the French King Philip III (reigned 12170-1285), whose father confessor he was. This edifying work enjoyed great popularity and was translated into several languages.

The manuscript, written in two columns, is illustrated by seven allegorical-didactic miniatures in rectangular frames, set in the width of either one or two columns of text. The illustrations are not very refined either in its drawing or in its somewhat dull colouring.

The miniature on folio 46 shows the Descent of the Holy Spirit.
