The picture shows an initial from the Carmelite Missal (folio 68v).
The designer of the Carmelite Missal made extensive use of acanthus foliage in the decoration of initials. A type of feathery acanthus is used; frequently it is twisted into spiral patterns. A further feature is the idea of filling out the body of an initial with small figures or angel heads. It has been suggested that one of the major artists of the missal who was responsible for the change in style was trained in Flanders or the Low Countries.
