Johannes of Troppau: Evangeliary

1368
Manuscript (Codex Vindobonensis 1182), 375 x 256 mm
Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna

This Evangeliary, a service book which contains extracts from the gospels to be read out during the mass, is a masterpiece of Bohemian-Moravian manuscript illumination from the reign of Emperor Charles IV (1347-1378). As seen from the illustration on folio 55v, the miniatures were influenced by Italian Trecento painting.
