The Wenceslas Bible

1390s
Manuscript (Codex Vindobonensis 2759-2764), 530 x 365 mm

Bathing scenes and bathing wenches - on folio 130r an enticing attendant is depicted inside the initial U - have provoked a wide variety of interpretations of this magnificent manuscript. It was thought to be a description of the frivolous king's brothel experiences. However, the images certainly contain a more serious symbolism: physical cleansing and spiritual purification.
