The Egerton Genesis is a pictorial narrative of the biblical Genesis, supplemented by legendary material. It was commissioned in the fourteenth century for the entertainment of a middle-class patron and his friends. It contains 20 parchment folios with full-page drawings on each folio, usually in four compartments, in ink. The illustrations were made by a Flemish master working in England, identified by some scholars as the Utrecht painter Michiel van der Borch.
The miniature on folio 5v shows the construction of the Tower of Babel, with masons carrying materials up a ladder, mixing mortar, and on the right, Nimrod (identified by an inscription over his head) is advised by sages to stop building the tower.
