The opening of the Office of the Dead in this Book of Hours is illustrated with the legend of the Three Living and the Three Dead. This legend tells of three young men who were out riding one day. Suddenly three skeletons appeared. 'Who are you?', the young men asked and the skeletons replied, 'We are you when you are dead.'
