This manuscript contains a compilation of episodes on the life of King Louis IX of France, also referred to as Saint Louis (reigned 1226-1270). It was produced at the behest of Cardinal Charles de Bourbon, archbishop of Lyon, between 1480 and 1482. The anonymous author of the story and the miraculous tales told in this book was quite certainly a layman. The illustrations were executed by an anonymous book painter referred to as the Master of the Cardinal de Bourbon, and others.
The miniature on folio 82r combines several time sequences in a single cycle of events. In the far background one can see the French fleet arriving in the harbour of Naples with the relicts of the French king Louis IX on board. In the foreground a procession moves through the narrow streets of the city, accompanied by the new French king, Philip II, on horseback escorting the reliquary with the remains of Louis. Two small illustrations below show the entry of the reliquary into a church and clerics praying before the altar upon which it has been placed.
