In libris Epitomarum illustriorum virorum Plutarchi

1450s
Manuscript (Ms. CCXXXIX)
Biblioteca Capitolare, Verona

This manuscript consists of three incomplete volumes of the Epitome of Plutarch. It was translated from Greek by Pietro Candido Decembrio (1399-1472), a humanist who worked for Filippo Maria Visconti, and as a secretary at the Aragonese court. The manuscript is decorated by fine miniatures of the Lombard school and contains the most complete fifteenth-century figurative commentary to Plutarch's work.

The initial from folio 107 represents Marius, wearing an opulent garment bordered in ermine and holding a lance.
