The Nicomachean Ethics is the principal ethical treatise of Aristotle (384-322 B.C.), the most celebrated philosopher of Greek Antiquity. The manuscript written in Greek was produced for Andrea Matteo Acquaviva, Duke of Atri. According to the signature on folio 80r, the principal illuminator was Reginaldus Piramus from Monopoli.
The illustration on folio 45v consists of two large miniatures framing 11 lines of text. Here Aristotle deals with the intellectual as opposed to the moral virtues. The figure seated in the top miniature may be an allegory of wisdom and understanding. The lower half of the folio depicts three scenes from the adventures of Odysseus.
