This Florentine Renaissance codex contains Petrarch's Trionfi followed by the sonnets of the Canzoniere. The opening pages of the Trionfi are each decorated with a wide border of white vine scroll inhabited by multicoloured birds and with a rectangular miniature, which occupies the upper part of the page and extends into the outer margin, interrupting the border decoration. An example is folio 43 representing the Triumph of Time.
The decoration of the Trionfi is attributed to Giovanni d'Antonio Varnucci (1416-1457). It belongs to Varnucci's late period and can be seen as a delightful forerunner to the famous series of manuscripts of the Trionfi illuminated by Francesco di Antonio del Chierico. The figures are painted with great care, with their ages and social ranks well characterised.
