Matteo Palmieri: City of Life

c. 1463
Manuscript (Plut. 40. 53.)
Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Florence

The text of this manuscript deals with the qualities that a good citizen should possess. It was written by Matteo Palmieri (1406-1475), a Florentine writer and politician. It is a poem based on Dante's Divine Comedy. The manuscript was probably commissioned by a member of the Palmieri family.

Folio 41v contains a miniature representing the celestial sphere, the zodiac and the symbols of the constellations, drawn in pen and painted in watercolour. The illumination is attributed to Francesco Botticini.
