Urbino Bible

1476-78
Manuscript (Urb. lat. 1, 2, 2 volumes)
Biblioteca Apostolica, Vatican

The portrait vignette on the title page (folio 1v) shows the patron of the manuscript, Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino above the coat of arms of his family supported by putti. It is an idealised portrait of the duke, whose face was disfigured by the cut of a lance. The portraits of Federico and his wife are well known from the famous facing portraits executed by Piero della Francesca.
