Book of Hours

1490s
Manuscript (Ms. Lat. 740)
Biblioteca Estense, Modena

This manuscript probably belonged to Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, Archbishop of Milan in 1497. The scribe was Giovan Battista de' Lorenzi, who also wrote several other fine Milanese manuscripts in the late fifteenth century.

The miniature on folio 22v, which occupies the lower part of the page, represents a female saint, probably St Barbara, holding a martyr's palm., seated beside a broken column decorated on the base with an effigy of an emperor set within a medallion.
