De evitandis venenis et eorum remediis

1480s
Manuscript (Ms. 125)
Biblioteca Casanatense, Rome

This manuscript contains a treatise on poisons and their remedies by Giovanni Matteo Ferrari (died c. 1470), the court doctor of Francesco Sforza, the Duke of Milan, to whom this work was dedicated. The present manuscript is not the dedication copy, it was copied in Naples.

The picture shows folio 11 which is finely decorated with festoons of laurel interspersed with cameos and pearls. There are portraits of four Roman emperors in the corners: Octavian, Titus, Nero and Domitian. The artist responsible for the decoration is identifiable as Giovanni Todeschino, who worked for the court in Naples.
